I distinctly remember building dhrystone for my SIMH VAX.

I see you are building this with the default optimizer levels. Try to build
again with the optimizer turned off (-O0, you might have to edit Makefiles
for that as not all build tool chains obey pkgsrc flags for that). Since
gcc was - from what I've read - never that awesome for VAX ot begin with,
that loses you little and gains a bit more compiler stability.
