Yep, the FPA bord was optional (and uncommon).  But that was just a
hardware accelerator; all FP instructions were implemented in microcode.
Note that the 11/780 had the same thing (but on multiple cards).

Same is true on the 86x0. The FPA is optional, and just accelerates FP. But it does FP just fine without it. Just slower.

That said, "my" 8650 do have the FPA.
