Update: After trying various permutations of boot loader and kernel, I
finally went back to 1.6.2 and that *almost* works. I get all the normal
kernel boot messages and then the console hangs. All the later kernels
I've tried don't even display the first copyright message. I've included
the boot display below in case it contains any clues.
