An Alpha will do surely. You can probably even get it to work
using an Alpha running Tru64, if you find that easier to
configure and get running.

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what the mopd problem might be,
but if the PC end freezes, it strongly points to a problem 
with mopd. I expect it does "just enough" of the MOP protocol
to do whatever the original author needed (which was probably
to downline load a DECserver or similar). VAX console all
(or almost all?) implement MOPv3 and not MOPv4. But some
of them have bugs which have to be worked around in the
MOP server. I have no idea what the bugs might be though.
