Somthing from 1.6-release/stable is what I would recommend at the
moment. I tried -current from late May and it was quite unstable. (NFSD
causes kernel panics.)

Maybe this machine has a similar system architecture like the MV3100m9x
or VAX4000m100? If yes you need patched boot blocks. Try
