I think I found it. SCSI controller was set to show that device as a 
tape. Testing now...


Hmm.. Well, it gets farther - sees it as a du/ra - but now when I try to 
run disklabel on it, it shows the disk as having no partitions. Hmm... 
looking back at dmesg, I see this:
ra1: attempt to bring on line failed:  unit offline (not mounted) (code 
3, subcode 1)

Perhaps I need to play with the controller some more....
