A similar thread came up on the OpenBSD Journal site
(http://www.deadly.org/). The consensus there was that increased
optimisation abilities in recent releases of gcc weren't really
beneficial to older (smaller, slower) machines. The topic was in
relation to a BSD licensed compiler called TenDRA
(http://www.tendra.org/).
