For the sake of thoughtful discussion.....

why not just update the clock once at the end
of the timezone menus and not be doing anything
periodically at all that causes the blinking?

Also, when exiting to the final menu where one
would normally reboot the machine, it blinkens
several times again, before settling down into
the menu query.

I guess I don't see the logic behind the blinken
in the first place.

Anyway, if it gets slowed down to minutewise
blinks, that will do for now.
