I'm not fortunate enough to have a VAX 4000, so I would have
to check the documentation.  Generally speaking on a 32-bit
machine, a bank is four byte-wide (30 pin, 8 or 9 bit) SIMMs
or a single word-wide (72 pin, 32 or 36 bit) one. That said,
there are an awful lot of variables when it comes to the
structure and timing of memory, and there's always the
designer wildcard (if they used page interleaving for
example, you might need a pair of word-wide SIMMs).
Hopefully someone here is more familiar with your machine,
and can provide a more useful answer.
