Ending up with distinctly less hair than when I started this effort, my
VAXstation 4000/90 now has NetBSD 1.5.2 installed and booting.

How I got the MOP/BOOTP/NFS install working is totally beyond me. Armed
only with the DOS attitude, "If it fails the first time, try running it
again, it might work this time", I repeatedly tried "boot netbsd" after
it failed with an Input/Output error, (actually this is partially
untrue, it was "boot netbsd-1.5.2", so many kernels tried :-), until one
time, it worked and sysinst came up.

The only thing I can guess apart from faulty VAX hardware, is perhaps
the Linux NFS server which I was using wasn't playing ball. I used the
same server to get my NetBSD alpha working in much the same way, but no
doubt someone here will have a word to say regarding this. ;-)

One question regarding this hardware. Currently, I have 64MB installed
as 4x 16MB SIMMs in slots 1, 3, 6 & 8. If I wanted to add more memory,
what are my options? Can I add arbitrary extra sticks or do I have to
maintain a certain order/pairing?

Anyway, I can start playing now, and the machine certainly feels quite
nippy for its age. I guess because the machine autoboots fine, I don't
have the infamous busted firmware?

Cheers

Matt
