Please give the BETA / ALPHA releases a try, so that errors can be
ironed out bevore the release. And to stay -current is no big deal.
There are docs on http://www.de.netbsd.org/ that will give you advice.

OpenBSD may have the same problem with that machine like NetBSD: Can't
boot from disk. But you can load the kernel via network and continue to
boot from a local disk. To get the dist on the disk is easy:
disklabel, newfs, mount, untar, installboot, a bit of vi /etc/rc.conf,
done.
