Well the subject already askes the question :

When I install NetBSD 1.5.2 for vax, is it a.out or ELF ?

The reason for asking is, I want to build current
and get the following error :

don't know how to make /usr/lib/crtbegin.o. Stop

After searching the Internet I found out that this
was a a.out, ELF problem in /etc/mk.conf (OBJECT_FMT=???)
