I guess the thing that annoys me is that you can write this area without 
going through some weird connotations like modern flash chips (write this 
address with this value, then this other address with another value, then 
the next thing has to be a certain data pattern then you have 10 uS to 
start your write kinds of hoops.)

Presumably its an EEPROM in this box rather than a FLASH chip.
