Hi,

I'm new to this group and the world of the VAX. But I am certainly not
new to *nix in it's many guises...

I've liberated a VAXstation 3100/80 and a VAX 4000/705A from the crusher
at work. They are currently sat in my spare bedroom next to my two Sun
SPARCstation and an AlphaServer 2000, along with the many x86 *nix
boxes. The 3100/80 was no problem to install. It took about a day to get
NetBSD/VAX 1.5 installed, and most of that was finding a copy of mopd
that compiled and a mop boot file that wasn't corrupt. It now boots
happily off it's internal disks. The 4000/705A is a bit more difficult.
It's DSSI based and has no internal disks. I found what I believed to be
a centronics SCSI-1 connector in a card riveted to the chassis on the
left hand side. I don't know what it is, but after playing with a BA350
and SCSI cables for a couple of hours I was no closer to having
storage... It was at this time that I noticed a little sticker in the
bottom left hand corner of the case. Apparently the box used to be a
4000/600 and was upgraded by DEC in November of 1996 to a 4000/705A.

If I could rescue some of the storage that was originally attached
(HSD30 + SCSI BA350?) would NetBSD be able to use it? I believe (I could
be wrong here, as two weeks ago DEC part number were just a jumble of
numbers and letters to me!) that it's DSSI to the HSD30 controller and
then SCSI to the disks.

So in the mean time I was trying to push on with a diskless install. I'm
using a FreeBSD x86 box as the mop/bootparam/nfs server. This is what
I'm getting:
