Just for the record :

 drive <- SCSI -> MSCP <- QBus -> VAX
 tape  <-        TMSCP

What I'm trying to say is, that the tapes are using a slighlty
different
protocol.

And forget the "dream" about a $ 100-200 MSCP/TMSCP home-made
controller.

Just use NFS until the lucky day, you find a controller for $50 on ebay
