the alpha before it was named alpha was called eVAX - the source for some
confusion (just as the vax was pdp a decade and a half earlier).

there were vax designes that were upgradeable to vax

while alpha was 64 bit, VMS up to 7 was only a 32 bit OS on the alpha -
again a source for confusion (32 bit  sign extended addresses were used).
