hmmm, maybe the ambient noise level in my "computer lab" at home is high enough
that i never noticed this.  when i hit the switch they get quiet.  but then
again, i didn't realize how much noise my SPARCstorage Array 100 at work made
until i moved to my new desk.  (from in the computer lab proper to a section
that has been converted to cubes)

probably in the power supply, that's the only other place a fan could be in the
upper part that i can think of.  although i guess it depends on the machine, on
my 4000 boxes there are absolutely no fans anywhere except the fan tray and
maybe the power supply.
