give it a control-c during bootup, right before you see the 'automatic 
boot in progress' message. if you miss it, just try it again :) 

on the pmaxen, if you didnt have the automatic boot set in the console, it
would halt at the single-user shell and only continue booting when that 
shell exited.. on the vax, i dont remember or know how to get the same 
effect.. i just ^c'ed at the right moment :)
