The GENERIC kernels chew a lot of unpageable memory for all the extra
add-ons. Once you have a stripped-down kernel on a lower memory machine,
you should see much improved compiler performance.
Note that the toolchain did not change significantly from 1.4 to 1.5 -- the
compiler is the same, albeit possibly with a couple very minor bugfix
differences.
