Hmmm? I installed 1.5 on my VS4k90 from the 1.5 release tar balls and
/usr/mdec contains the files it should. If there is no boot and xxboot
in /usr/mdec somthing went wrong.

If you have located the files copy boot to / and do a
disklabel -B ra0 -b /usr/mdec/xxboot
See disklabel(8).

You can boot the 1.5 kernel with bootblocks from 1.4. Due to a change in
the bootstrap system between 1.4 and 1.5 it will not get the root-dev
correctly. So a 1.5 kernel booted with 1.4 boot blocks will ask you for
the root-dev.
