This is because "1.4L" is an early *1.5* kernel, and it is incompatible 
with 1.4.x

Similarly, now kernels out of -current get version 1.5<letter> but they 
aren't really 1.5 any more since 1.5 was branched off a while ago to make a 
release, now they are basis for 1.6.

Its confusing as hell I know.
