Sigh, I feel so stupid. The "<unknown>" boot device should have been a clue 
(and it was eventually) I had trimmed out the "excess" and managed to trim 
out the si1 SCSI device. Oh well, here's one for the FAQ, if you get stray 
interrupts and your boot device is unknown, make sure your kernel has your 
boot device configured! :-)
