Maybe my /usr/bin/ld is, but my $DESTDIR/usr/bin/ld is not. If
$DESTDIR/usr/bin/cc  does not use $DESTDIR/usr/bin/ld, and cannot be
made to use it, I think it is broken.

Indeed, copying $DESTDIR/usr/bin/ld to /usr/bin/ld makes it work.

Therefore, I think the build process is (at least somewhat) broken.
