Subject: Continuing MV3300 funzies --- dead ethernet card?

Still working furiously with (or cussing furiously at) my funky MicroVAX
3300, I don't seem to be able to get the ethernet to work, on Ultrix 4.0
or 4.2. Ping sees the port is alive, netstat -i says it is ifconfigged,
but ftp into or out of it just dies.... timeout, nothing. Netstat suggests
some packets are corrupted or with errors. The ifconfig line is rc.local
is: ifconfig ln0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx up. This is when setup to use
either the AUI port with a dongle, or the BNC port with a terminator TEE.
Neither of the little LED lights on the patch connect panel show activity.
The box I was using to get into or out of the VAX is a Sparcbook Solaris.
It works fine with a VAXstation 3100/M76, but not with the MicroVAX 3300.
I seated and reseated all cables and boards, just in case something was
loose, but it did not make any diff.

Is there something strange about the DEC built-in ethernet on the KA640
that I am missing? Any suggestions or insights are appreciated.

Thanks

Bob
