I dunno exactly if it fixes everything, but, sometimes when I have those
sorts of problems, I default setup all the VT terminals to VT100 rather
than VT3xx or 4xx type terminals.  The good ol' VT100 usually works fine,
9600 baud 8/n/1 no handshake.
