I recently took my first steps in the VAX world, also with a MicroVAX 3100.
The first thing to do is to get the excellent VAX network booting HOWTO
document from the VAX pages at www.netbsd.org. This goes though all the steps
in detail, including how to configure Linux as a netboot server. The second
thing is to check the small switch beside the status LEDs on the back of the
unit, this is called the "break enable" switch in the manual. I found that
this had to be in the "up" position for netbooting to be successful. This also
has the effect of making port 3 the console port (the console is on port 1
when the switch is down).
