Forgive me from coming back on this xmit logic. Are you sure it is not
a hardware problem? For I cannot find any logic behind the dying
logic. It behaves like the weather. At times it isn't there at all for
hours, even when I connect through telnet and do some 'work' that way.
Then it is there immediately when I boot the machine and want to write
dmesg to a file in my home directory, which is on a disk in the vax,
not on the server. Rebooting (halt button) and doing it again, this
time logging in as root amd writing the dmesg to /root, which is on
the server: same story. I don't mean the occasional one time message
with automagic recovery, but machine hanging. No response except to
ping... OK, I reboot even harder (turning vax off, making coffee).
Boot, ask dmesg, no problem. Ask dmesg to be written to file (in
/home/marc): Again: xmit ...!
(I find the file after reboot, but sometimes it is empty, sometimes it
does have dmesg... Even less logic.)
For the record: this did work fine before. This was on the console
(DEC terminal). The only way out seems to be to work through telnet
and have the console up with 'halt' already typed. And then jump up
and press ENTER ...

God bless DEC for the HALT button. And NetBSD for a decent fsck.
