Lest this confuse anyone, the issue of version naming has been
discussed to death, with no clear conclusion that it "should" be any
particular way, including the way Chuck describes.

The biggest problem *I* see with Chuck's suggestion is that 1.5<letter>
"feels like" *post*-1.5 rather than *pre*-1.5; the second biggest is
that it suffers from the same problem the current scheme suffers from:
it makes -current versions and release-branch versions look comparable
when they're not.

Of course, 1.4X is post-1.4, but it's not post-1.4.2.  Neither is it
pre-1.4.2; rather, it's neither newer nor older than 1.4.2 - it's just
not comparable with it in that way.
