OK, here's a little more data:

I just pulled another TK50Z-GA from a Decstation 5000/240, where it has
been working reliably for over a year now.  Hooked it up to the 
Vaxstation.  Same error messages.  Is anyone else successfully 
using these drives with tar?  Speak up!
