This seems to be a common problem with 1.4.2  I was told that it was
because my bootloader was too old when I was trying to boot the 1.4T
kernel, but having reinstalled since due to a stupid mistake with newfs
:(  I see the same symptoms with the plain 1.4.2 installation.
