yes, they are. I checked it explicitely.

no, since it did work fine in the firmware as well as when booting from
floppy.

I've now installed 1.4.2. The cursor now flashes normally, not so rapidly.
Still it is not possible to input the root device. The system does somehow
react on my keystrokes, and it outputs some letters which are somewhat
correlated to what I had typed. There seems to be some delay though.
Maybe there's a keyboard buffer which the driver does not handle
correctly? When I hit a key, I sometimes do get sequences which I had
pressed lots of keystrokes before. Sometimes keys keep repeating all over
(the keyboard works absolutely fine though when booting from disk),
sometimes some keys appear I hadn't pressed at all. Very strange. I'd
say the keyboard/console driver is faulty with that kernel image.
