I have done as you suggested,  I still get:

[Usual boot info as far as finding SCSI devices]
boot device: <unknown>
root device: /* here I give it sd0a */
dump device (default sd0b): <return>
file systemn (default generic): <return)
 
and then it continues:

root on sd0a dumps on sd0b
root file system type: ffs

etc.

Any more ideas?  It is not critical, but it is inconvenient.  When I was
netbooting it this did not happen if that helps.
