My first tought was that the drive doesn't spin up correctly.
I found the jumper settings at:
http://theref.aquascape.com/hard_drives/layouts/hs_dec_rz5x.html
and checked them. It spins up but the error messages are the same.
And as I was writing it works with VMS, so it looks like the drive is good.
It also works under linux with my PC.
