    Try setting the drive to spin up at system start up, just to see if that
is why the kernel is reporting it as offline. I've gotten "operation not
supported by device" from mount and disklabel with removable devices and
some cheap Peecee/Mac SCSI stuff claiming to be SCSI-2 compliant, but
usually they are picked up by the kernel at startup fine.
