I'm assuming that Rick's problem is that his console login is showing up
on ttySf? Or at least he's not clarified if he is trying to use a port
from a serial MUX.
I'd suspect that there's potentially something amuck with your /dev/
directory. Make sure that your /dev/console has major,minor numbers of
0,0 and you might check to see if a /dev/ttySf exists. If it does exist,
it should have major,minor numbers of 34,15.
From what I remember, 1.3 didn't have any near as complete of an /etc/ttys
as the 1.4 and 1.4.1 releases. I know David Brownlee and I added a number
of entries to account for all the various MUX devices available to
NetBSD/vax.
And if you're going to use a 1.3 tree distribution, certainly go for the
1.3.2 release. IIRC, 1.3 was pretty miserable. Of course 1.4.1 is quite
a bit nicer, and then I think 1.4.2 is already on it's way.
