uClinux? Should be perfect for that. Already runs on Atari ST's, Amiga 500's
and the like.

That is a whole different story.. But if DEC (in it's infinite wisdom) 
used off the shelf parts then you may 'only' need to locate some 
addresses for I/O chips.

If they used custom hardware then you're out of luck..
