A context switch is one of the things that is quite fast on a VAX.
Actually, the switch is only 4 instructions :-)
I've read a paper once that had checked how different architectures worked
in multiprogrammed environments, and they showed for example that a 
MicroVAX II (which is quite slow) was almost twice as fast as a 
SparcStation 2 (which is much faster) in making context switches :-)
