Hi all,

I've answered my own question, so I'm sorry for taking up extra
bandwidth with my original post. But I think this information might
be able to help other people with VAXstations missing their monitors,
so I'm following up with what I found out.

I was using the pinout from www.vaxarchive.org/hw/bc18.html as my
guide for the VAXstation video pinout. This may indeed be correct for
a VAXstation II/GPX, but it doesn't appear to work for a VAXstation
3100 with a VS40X. Pins 1 and 9 on the VAXstation side should be
reversed, as follows:

VAXstation (pin #) Sony Multiscan 15sf (pin #)
   ------------------ ---------------------------

                  1 ........ Red Hi ............ 1
                  10........ Green Hi .......... 2
                  11........ Blue Hi ........... 3
                  9 .........Red Return ........ 6
                  2 .........Green Return ...... 7
                  3 .........Blue Return ....... 8
                  Hood ...... Ground ........ Hood

This configuration worked for me, and I now have perfectly usable video
on my Multiscan 15sf. It looks great, though a bit small (15") :)

I have checked several models of Sony monitors, and each of them
claims to allow sync-on-green. I imagine many other manufacturers of
multisync SVGA monitors allow sync-on-green as well, even without the
convenient BNC connectors on the back of the monitor, so if you feel
like experimenting, and have a VAXstation with no monitor, you can
give this cable a try.

As always, please be careful fooling with hardware, you make cables
like this at your own risk. I could have damaged my hardware, but
luckily I didn't. I also made sure to check that the Sony monitor
could handle the sync rate the VAX is putting out (it does, quite well).

Have fun cable making!
