Using the scsictl command to detect the RRD40 was successful ('scsictl 
scsibus1 scan 0 0').  This would suggest to me that at boot time, possibly 
unit zero is not being scanned and/or the response the time of the RRD40 is 
too long for the kernel to pick it up.  I'll take a peak at the kernel 
source later, but thought this might ring a bell with someone on the list.

A side note on the RRD40 however not related to the scsi issue.  It 
apparently reads the first session on the CD rather than conforming to the 
more modern approach of data drives reading only the last 
session.  Something to keep in mind when burning CD's for use on this drive.
