Yes, the drive shows up OK. I mean, I was able to load the bootstrap and
the kernel from it after all.

I've moved the drive's setting around to rule this out. Originally it was 
0, now it's 1.

The kernel I'm using is the 1.4.1-GENERIC kernel from the pre-1.4.1
kern.tgz set.
