Hello VAXherds.

I just picked up a VS4k (hey baby, wanna run VMS?) and have been graduall=
y
picking enough bits up to get the thing running. I now have a keyboard fr=
om a
dumpster that works with the booter, and a DECstation mouse that a friend=
 of
mine won at DEF CON V. I also have the original colour monitor (17 inch,
DT-??? I think), an RZ 200 megger (original), and some weird kind of flop=
py
card. Appears to be DEC part. I'd give ser#, but its all back in my dorm.=
 I
messed up the monitor calibration trying to get it to work with a custom =
Xfree
setup on my Matrox. Now I just get shaky, wavy, chaotic bootrom stuff dan=
cing
all over the screen, but I can check stuff out, and my ethernet seems to =
work,
etc. Its not damaged, just out of kilter.

I have a number of questions:

1) What are my chances of getting the SCSI to work?
2) What are my chances of getting the floppy (also on SCSI) to work?
3) Am I going to have to learn BSD kernel internals to do it?
4) Is there a resource for what the status LEDs and the fancy magic tones=
 it
emits on boot mean?
5) What kind of terminal emulation should I try on the serial port to tal=
k to
it? I plan to use an Amstrad PPC640 (brick) portable 8088 running minix a=
s the
terminal.
6) Is there sound support? I plan to embed it in my 1981 Toyota Tercel.

I am in the 604 area code, and also seek VMS 7.2 install media. Hobbyist
license aquired, and I am currently looking for the next BC VAXLUG meetin=
g so
that I can leech. I have aquired an RZ650 and a CDROM from a VS4000's
companion drive enclosure. I am a cashless loser with time on his hands, =
so
maybe I just might try getting the thing to work as an mpeg player, if on=
ly to
annoy my neighbour. My remote boot system will be Linux 2.2.10.

And I thought that the VAXbar and the VAXbong were cool. I'm going for
VAXmobile. I promise photos. Yes, I know the power supply is a bztch. I
already have 3 battery banks in the trunk to power my stereo...

I am _not_ joking. Ideally I would like to use a spare 400mb Quantum (I
understand I can do this?) with VMS in the thing too.
