I just finished putting some IDE drives onto my uVax III, I used a channel
controller running FreeBSD and connected it to the Q-bus with an M7516-PA
card and a high speed serial line called "ethernet." it uses the "NFS"
protocol. 8GB on line for $125. Not a bad deal. I can even boot from the
IDE drives!

P.S. I've also got a Sigma Information Systems cabinet in my junk pile
where I could install the channel controller inside the skins of the chassis!
