I'm finding that compiling a clean GENERIC kernel from the 1.4 source
results in a large number of zombies lingering around. Most of them are
leftovers from portmap and cron daemon processes. After a couple of days,
my process table filled up. I don't have the same problem using the
1.4_BETA kernel bundled with the official 1.4 binary release.

Anyone else seen similar things?
