I've seen the same things you do, on a KA650 in a BA123, and I'm now
using an in-between version of /boot to load kernels. I'm running a
-current from a few weeks ago, and I *believe* the working /boot is
from the 1998-12-01 snapshot. However, I've been juggling so many
kernels and bootstraps lately, that I could be mistaken.

I can send you a copy of the working /boot binary tonight if you want.
