Subject: free VAXstation II systems in Cheshire, England---maybe

I mentioned a while back that I planned to pass on some used Digital
Equipment which I can't use myself. It's taken longer than I had
planned for a variety of reasons, and due to circumstances beyond my
control I actually have to get rid of it soon.

I decided to give first pick to some people I corresponded with last
time (when I gave a PDP 11 away) who didn't make it on time. I'll give
them first pick, but am posting this now because of the unfortunate
short notice to make sure everyone sees it. (In a couple of cases the
email bounced; if you think you should have gotten one, let me know; I'm
pretty sure I saved all responses to the PDP posting and based my list
of folks on that.)

Email me if you're interested. If it's still here Tuesday morning, I'll
contact whoever responded (WITH A DEFINITE YES) first. If no-one has,
or if those don't work out, I'll just go down the list of other
respondents.

Below is the message I sent out to the people whom I had said I would
give first pick last time, which contains a description of the kit.

With the caveat that I'm not sure if I traded away the system disk on
the one machine, I have actually powered up both, changed the system
password (not sure I remember it) AS DOCUMENTED IN THE VMS FAQ---you'll
want this anyway so read it now---logged in etc, so hard- and software
are OK. With the hobbyist license, however, you'd probably want to
install the latest VMS version from scratch.

Hello!

PLEASE REPLY IMMEDIATELY IF YOU'RE INTERESTED, AND EVEN MORE QUICKLY IF
YOU DEFINITELY WANT THE STUFF.

I'm sending this to you since I have you down as someone who expressed
an interest in some VAX stuff I had before and in any I might have in
the future. Well, as a result of many things it's taken me much longer
to sort things out, but now I know I want to give some stuff away.

Basically, it's two VAXstation 2000 systems. I'll send this message out
first while writing another one describing the configuration in more
detail. They both have some old version of VMS on them, one has an
internal TK50. I also have an external TK50 (presumably it would go
with the machine without a tape drive) and a colour monitor (only
meaninful for the GPX, which is the one with the internal tape drive)
and some assorted cables etc.

I have powered both machines up. One has a lot of licenses. :) I have
since taken a disk from this machine (the GPX) but there is another disk
in it (I THINK it's the system disk:).

As I am leaving the UK for a longer period next Friday, the machines
definitely have to leave the premises here next Friday morning at the
absolute latest. The earlier, the better of course. Monday is not
possible to pick it up. All other days are possible, though Thursday
and, to a lesser extent, Tuesday are not preferred.

I'm sending this to all 6 people I have on the list. You are number x.
I will wait until tomorrow at this time and then give a machine to the
highest number on the list, and another to the next highest, WHO
DEFINITELY SAYS `I'LL TAKE IT' before then. (That is, not the first
person who responds---since the time scale is so short, I really can't
take the risk of not giving it to the first person who definitely says
yes.) If there is only one taker, then he can have all if he wants.
After tomorrow this time, it's first-come first-served.

I realise it's the weekend and that this might not be completely fair.
However, if someone wants AND CAN GET the kit now, I can't take the risk
of waiting until next week since I might not get rid of it before I have
to leave. Perhaps someone could take both, even if he doesn't need both
(or even if he does) and be happy with passing one system down to
someone else on the list. The `used VMS hardware' community is great
and I'm glad to be part of it; it would be nice if someone could take
all this kit off my hands and perhaps pass some of it own to someone
else rather than keeping it all for himself.

Sorry for the long delay and short notice, but it was really do to
circumstances beyond my control.

Since I'm leaving on Friday, my schedule is rather hectic now. However,
if no one can pick the stuff up but someone still might want it, I might
be persuaded (for a small fee for petrol and time) to haul the stuff
over.
