It's a MicroVax, not a VaxStation...

By serial console do you mean a VT terminal plugged into the machine? If 
so, that's what I'm using.

I don't think the machine is getting as far as trying to use the terminal. 
Looking at the bootparamd messages, it doesn't get a request for the swap 
file, only for root.

It's a MicroVax 3100/40. :-(
