ftp> lcd /mnt
ftp> get base.tar "| tar xfp -"

ought to work to get around that particular problem, although you
need to make sure you have the "will be /usr" file system mounted
at /mnt/usr before starting that.  I'll mention a few more
details directly to Ronny.
