Is this regarding attempts at netbooting your VAX 4000/300, or are you
trying to netboot one of the known supported VAX systems?  And then also,
what's your base Linux boot server like, i.e. which distribution,
distribution version, and Linux kernel version? I don't have any answers
off the top of my head, but knowing the above I may be able to offer some
suggestions. 

I'm assuming you've diagnosed this past the known `whoami' failed problems
with Linux 2.0.x (and maybe more recent versions but I haven't yet
checked)?  That work-around is documented in the HOWTO, by explicitly
populating your ARP cache prior to adding entries to the RARP table
(sample scripts are included at the end of the HOWTO).
