I just aquired a MicroVAX 3100, said to be a model 10. (In any case it
has a KA-41A and 2 SCSI buses). Currently it has Ultrix 4.1 installed
on 4 SCSI disks but the installation has been "modified" a lot over the
years. In other words, it's somewhat of a mess.

Of course I'd like to install NetBSD on it, but first I'd want it to
netboot from my BeBox. But even though BeOS is mostly POSIX compliant,
stuff like mopd (requires bpf), rarpd (requires bpf) and rpc.bootparamd
(requires rpc) isn't all that easy to port. There is an nfsd but it
has a portmapper built-in, which probably will conflict with other
portmappers, should it run.

Also, it has 32M of memory and I understand that also makes netbooting
impossible for now.

So in the mean time I'd like to re-install Ultrix 4.1. I have the install
media (TK-50 tapes) and almost the full grey wall. What's missing is
(of course) the Basic Installation Guide and the Advanced Installation
Guide.

So for now I have the following questions:

1. How to make a safety backup of the install tapes (which are hopefully
still readable). I assume the tapes consist of sequences of records
separated by tape marks, and I'd need to know the size and the count
of these records.
2. Will I mess up enormously if I just boot from the first tape and
blunder along without the installation instructions?
