I think they are actually rechargable nicads (Megan or Allison should
pipe in here (or Dave M. or Tim Shoppa!)) I have never taken the 
little white plastic doobythlatcher (the term I recall from DEC
as to what that thing is called) to see what kind of batteries they were
BUT I think - from empirical evidence - that there is some sort of trickle
charger on it.
